National Bar Association's International Law Section: "Understanding the Crisis in Haiti and the Global Role of Lawyers as Social Engineers"- Part One Moderator: Attorney Robyn L. McCoy, Partner, McCoy & Associates, PLLC and Vice Chair of the NBA's International Law Section Panelists: Mr. Gary Juste, Former Acting Mission Director US Aid/Haiti, Ms. Johanna LeBlanc, J.D., L.L.M, Partner, Adomi Advisory Group, PLLC, Ms. Natassia "Tazzy" Janvier, National Chairwoman & CEO, National Black Law Students Association This panel helps to provide the general public and legal practitioners with a basic understanding of the current crisis in Haiti including the historical context of Haiti becoming the first liberated African nation in the Americas, the effect of the Haitian government being forced to pay millions in reparations to the French Government and the aftermath of US intervention in Haitian governance and affairs. There will be a discussion of the transitional government, the “multinational security support” to ensure the protection of the Haitian people from gang violence, paving a mechanism for humanitarian assistance to be provided to the Haitian people to prevent a famine as well as the need for the extension of the “temporary protected status” for Haitians in the US.
